Primary Gallery; through Dec. 31Primary Colours' Toys show deserves a lot of credit. Now in its ninth year, the annual exhibition organizes donations of art supplies to VSA Indiana for disabled Hoosiers, while providing an interesting glimpse at a wide swath of local artists. Toys also serves as an excellent gateway for new gallery goers to begin purchasing art - the works are created and priced as affordable gifts.
The work is usually extremely witty and clever, and most of the art this year certainly fit that description. Some of the art, such as Jeffrey Geesa's "Choking Hazzards," have titles that are sarcastic and relevant to the theme of the show. The faux pizza sauce label of Eric Stine's "COWABUNGA" conspicuously packs in a nostalgic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reference. The only disappointment: A lot of wall space was given to Mike Graves' collaborative pieces, which felt like simple, cliché street art for the gallery setting.
