"Three stars

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Hilbert Circle Theatre, April 27-29

Broadway musicals conductor Kimberly Grigsby galloped ISO players through four overtures and a dance number in 31 minutes, leaving the audience breathless and wondering what exactly they had been listening to. A number of us, rushing over from the McFadden Lecture at Clowes Hall, witnessed the overture to The Light in the Piazza via remote play in the lobby. In our seats, in rapid succession we heard “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue” from On Your Toes, and the overtures from Do I Hear a Waltz?, West Side Story, and Candide. Following intermission, Neil Sedaka transported us through his half-century song book as pianist/vocalist, to luxuriously calming effect. Prefacing his signature Rock ‘n Roll works, sung in the style of the recording stars who recorded them, Sedaka reminded us “Songs of the 50s were happy, even naïve, but you could understand all of the lyrics.”
