"The wait is over. Oceans presented by Old National Bank will open at the Indianapolis Zoo May 26. The former World of Waters Building closed in August 2006 to begin renovations. Zoo visitors who were familiar with the building as it was will find that walls and ceilings have been blown apart, pathways have been rearranged and even floors have been changed in their elevation.
Upon entering the transformed building, visitors will first encounter the redesigned OneAmerica Foundation Entry Gallery, featuring a reflecting pool. Then move into the Efroymson Gallery, where the old shark tank is now home to a whole school of bonnethead shark pups in a re-designed ocean environment. The reef exhibit that once held a large collection of Atlantic reef fish plus two large green moray eels will now feature a whole group of eels, while the tank next door will feature moon jellies.
But probably most intriguing for guests will be the Firestone Gallery featuring the shark touch pool, which holds a school of dog sharks.
The 2004 Indianapolis Power & Light Company exhibit Seahorses has been modified to fit into the new Oceans theme and includes towering tanks of three species of seahorses.
A new series of focus tanks comprising the Oceans Connections section of the exhibit, a gift of the Mike and Amy Alley Charitable Fund of Legacy Fund, will feature a rotating series of new species, often ones that illustrate the unique relationships among the oceans’ creatures.
New in the penguin exhibit, visitors will find a transparent panel beneath their feet that allows them to see (and appreciate the speed) of the penguins as they “fly” underwater from one side of the exhibit to the other
Admission to the Indianapolis Zoo is $13.50 and seniors and children 2-12 are $8.50. Parking is $5 per vehicle. For more information, call 317-630-2001 or go to www.indyzoo.com.
