Pike Performing Arts Center; March 31.
Magnificent dancing to inspired choreography with live music by Christine Kane and the Greasy Beans made it worth missing basketball at its finest averred a couple of die-hard hoopsters in the audience at PPAC. In essence, with NCDT it’s ABC all the way: athleticism, bravura, charisma. Standing still on a bare stage sans music, a single dancer bristles with electricity. In pairs, groupings or full company, they are awesome as they bring ballet forward as a living, breathing entity incorporating disco, country and bluegrass in story and movement. If you weren’t there you’ll have to imagine square dancing on toe. Speed, lifts and daring combinations throughout were exhilarating. Teens who wear pants to exhibit butt cleavage would do well to emulate NCDTs male dancers in body-fitting, waist-high jeans. That’s class. Michelle Jarvis of Butler Ballet reminded this reviewer that NCDT member Mia Cunningham, still dancing beautifully, was with Ballet Internationale a few years back. This program is a worthy use of The Ballet Fund administered by the Indianapolis Foundation. It also provided collaborative ticket sharing with DK. Nice all the way
