Spiritual meets popular culture as artist Laura LaForge explores modern-day interpretations of biblical teachings. Presentation of the exhibit is unique as a vintage Bible accompanies each piece of work, offering context to each of the artist’s depictions. LaForge’s interpretations are bold, colorful and surprisingly playful as she casts a new light on these iconic parables. “The Tree and Its Fruits” features a deep blue sky with faint deco designs, blurring the line between traditional parable and fanciful interpretation. Succulent fruits pile up at the bottom of the canvas: Vivid blues, oranges, reds and greens create a lush and plush vision of the tree. “The Sower and the Seeds” is a wonderful offering of pure painterly rhythm and expression. The flowing composition, undulating lines and curves of the landscape conjure a painterly vision similar to VanGogh’s “Starry Night.” Finally, LaForge’s “Wedding Banquet” intersects the biblical parable of the Wedding Banquet with pop culture as kitschy characters adorned in bright jewels, bling cell phones and frosted martini glasses appear at the banquet table. These tales and many more are interestingly strewn in a modern yet spiritual light through April 23. 317-833-7000.
