Ishmael Beah, author of the memoir A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, will speak at Clowes Memorial Hall Jan. 26, 7:30 p.m. as part of Butler University's Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series. Beah's book chronicles the harrowing years he spent caught up in the civil war in Sierra Leone -- first as a refugee, then as a child soldier. Now 28, Beah is a member of the Human Rights Watch Children's Rights Division Advisory Committee and has spoken before the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Emerging Threats and Opportunities at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory and many other NGO panels on children affected by the war. Admission is free, but a ticket is required. Tickets are available at the Clowes box office on the campus of Butler University, 317-940-6444.
