"Stephen Sondheim’s most controversial work and 2004 Tony winner for Best Revival of a Musical, Assassins, will be the inaugural presentation by Lowbrow Productions at the Hedback Theater (home of Footlite Musicals), 1847 N. Alabama St., Dec. 14-30. The dark-humored, poignant musical is about nine of the 14 presidential assassins throughout American history. Lowbrow chose this work because it “dares the audience to understand the right way in order to achieve the ‘American Dream’ and examines success, failure and the questionable drive for power and celebrity in American society.” It’s also apropos given the big-screen adaptation of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd is being released Dec. 21.
