"Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre has created an updated version of the holiday chestnut The Nutcracker, setting the story in a gray and realistic 21st century locale. Klara is portrayed as a child of the streets who finds that magic exists with the help of a homeless Drosselmeyer and a Biker Prince.
Gregory Hancock directs a cast of 103 young dancers. Klara will be danced by Sophia Cothrel (sixth grade, St. Simon the Apostle). Amanda Cothrel (sophomore, Hamilton Southeastern High School) dances the Sugar Plum Fairy. Chris Lingner (junior, University High School) dances the role of the Prince. The production features a score combining holiday music and the ethnic music of many countries.
Performances take place at Pike Performing Arts Center, 6701 Zionsville Road, on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m.; Dec. 2 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. General admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
