Crazy for You
Beef & Boards Dinner Theater
Directed by Eddie Curry
Through Sept. 25
Crazy for You, the "new" Gershwin musical, has an upbeat, energetic staging at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre through Sept. 25. Daniel Lee Robbons and Kathy Calahan star as Bobby Child and Polly Baker in Beef & Boards' 'Crazy for You'.
The show opened on Broadway in 1992. Its creation was at the behest of multimillionaire Roger Horchow, who wanted to see his favorite film featuring Gershwin music, 1930's Girl Crazy, adapted for the stage. Playwright Ken Ludwig did a rewrite and updated the story, but maintained the lyrics of the songs. Crazy For You was essentially Frankensteined from the Gershwin library. It ended up containing seven Gershwin songs from Girl Crazy; 13 other Gershwin songs were added from the stage and screen; and "Naughty Baby" appeared, which was not written either for the stage or films.
The story centers around Bobby Child. He works at the family-owned bank in New York, but his heart is on the stage. When he is sent out to Nevada to foreclose on a theater, he ends up falling in love and working to help the community save the theater.
B&B's production features talented performers and well-choreographed numbers - it lives up to the Gershwin standard. Songs such as "Slap That Bass," the signature "I Got Rhythm" and "Stiff Upper Lip" are nicely done. Daniel Lee Robbins as the impulsive Bobby and Kathy Calahan as coarse country girl Polly lead a capable ensemble to a pleasing payoff.
Crazy for You continues Tuesdays through Sundays. B&B is located at 9301 N. Michigan Road. Call 872-9664 or go to www.beefandboards.com.
