Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra; Hilbert Circle Theatre Wood Room; Aug. 6
One of the best-kept cultural secrets, First Monday Music Club meets monthly in an informal setting with munchies and insider/backstage programs presented by members of the ISO, representing all aspects of operating and playing in a symphony. Hosted by cellist Geoffrey Lapin, wine and cheese is offered to those who arrive at 7:15. The program begins at 7:30. Conviviality with cookies, fruit and punch follows. Aug. 6 featured principal trombonist James Beckel in his role as a composer whose works are commissioned and played by organizations worldwide, including our own ISO. Beckel demonstrated how he composes using a computer by having all 50 of us making the major decisions for the instrumentation, key and time signatures and development of the themes and ideas. “After the Storm” was sounding pretty good after an hour of doodling as the storm swirled around Monument Circle. Beckel will “clean it up” and report back on its eventual debut. Show up Sept. 10 (Sept. 3 is Labor Day) or Oct. 1 and thereafter for more such programs and to monitor the results of composing by consensus. Enter the Hilbert at the alley door, off the Pennsylvania and Market Street parking garage. E-mail MusicClub@IndianapolisSymphony.org or call 317-262-1897.
