"Three and a half stars (NR)
Oft-overlooked 1956 flying-saucer thriller with great special effects — courtesy of stop-motion animation master Ray Harryhausen — and some genuinely scary scenes. OK, so some of the acting is a tad wooden, but what the hey, the movie works. Hugh Marlowe and Joan Taylor costar. 83 minutes.
DVD INFO: The two-disc set includes the film in its original black and white along with a colorized edition (for those young ’uns who supposedly refuse to watch black and white). Extras include a new commentary track with Harryhausen and some others, an older Harryhausen interview about the film, featurettes on the Hollywood blacklist and Bernard Gordon (the screenplay writer whose real name was not included in the credits), the art of stop-motion animation, a look at a film-related comic book, plus features from a previous release of the movie.
