Comedy Dave Dugan’s baritone, halting delivery and non-stop non sequiturs are familiar ground for anyone who’s ever tuned into X-103’s Hang Over Café, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. Dugan’s comedy is served from the same casserole as his radio delivery. Dave Dugan will perform at Funny Bone May 12-15; 844-0300. “I suppose the style is sort of a stream of conscious one,” he says. “It feels more honest than overselling the material … Only a small percentage is actually improvised, although, those are my favorite moments. Improv is about as risky as giving Billy Joel your car keys.” Dugan is more of a joke teller than a story teller, delivering one liners in a “manic deadpan.”
“I prefer observational over topical but enjoy the topical if I can come up with it quick enough and recognize its short shelf life. ‘It looks like Janet Jackson’s breast peeked out and saw its shadow, so six more weeks of winter weather! Thanks a lot for the extra dose of cold, Timberlake.’ That material worked great shortly after the incident, but now it would feel sort of forced.”
Dugan is appearing May 12-15 at the Funny Bone, 3625 E. 96th St. Local favorite Dan Davidson is also on the bill, as is Jamie Simmons. Show times are 8 on Wednesday and Thursday; 8 and 10:30 p.m. for the weekend shows. Ticket prices range from $8 to $18. Call 844-0300 for information or reservations.
