"Rite of Spring" dance review

They threw chairs when Nijinsky performed Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in Paris in 1913. The chairs at the Indiana Repertory Theatre are fastened to the floor, so this sort of audience participation won't be possible when Dance Kaleidoscope premieres David Hochoy's full-length interpretation of Stravinsky's stirring score dealing with sacrifice, death and rebirth. Hochoy has transposed Stravinsky's idea of community to the present and asks what sort of sacrifice our community must make in order to continue to exist. Show times are June 4 at 7 p.m., June 5-6 at 8 p.m. and June 7 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20-$37 and are available at the IRT box office (140 W. Washington St.), by calling 317-635-5252 or by going to www.irtlive.com. There is also a one-hour Mini Matinee Thursday at noon for $6. For additional info, go to www.dancekal.org.
