Storyteller David Gonzalez entwined reality and myth, taking an eager audience with him last Saturday night. His unique brand of storytelling fused his own personal history seamlessly with the legends that he shared. First he gave life to the Greek myth of Orpheus. Gonzalez scatted and hummed as the horn player, bringing new music to the old story. Then he started a new tale, that of a mother trying to win the love of her stepson. Drawing from both Korean and African myths, Gonzalez connected the two stories through the force of his presence. He seemed almost as eager to tell the story as we were to hear it. Not limited to one art form, Gonzalez played original jazz tunes on the piano between speaking, and the second act was comprised mostly of his own poetry.
