The first 3D stop-motion animated feature (the 3D version is only at selected theaters), based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 children's novel, is a dark tale about a young girl (Dakota Fanning), unsatisfied with her parents (Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman), who finds a secret portal to an alternate reality where everybody is attentive and colorful, even if her "Other Parents" have buttons for eyes. Repeat visits show that the grass isn't really greener on the other side. Director Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) has crafted a great-looking, entertaining production with an evocative score. Some little ones may find the proceedings too scary at times, so see it with them. 100 minutes.
