Theater/Music

David Hoppe

Under the direction of Jose Valencia, Orkestra Projekt has been offering local audiences a new take on the concert music experience. It starts with the venue. OP performs in the Old Centrum at the corner of 12th Street and Central Avenue in the city's Historic Northside neighborhood. It's a soulful setting, redolent with mystery. This dovetails nicely with Valencia's determination to choose and perform music that provides a theatrical charge.

Orkestra Projekt opens its third season with performances Nov. 11 and Nov. 13. These performances will include a collaboration with NoExit, an Indianapolis-based theater group that recently performed as part of the Fringe Festival. Together, the groups will present The Soldier's Tale with music by Igor Stravinsky. The Soldier's Tale is directed by Michael Bachman, one of Indy's most audacious directors. The second half of the production will include Rossini's overture to L'Italiana in Algeri, continue with a nod to the film Amadeus and will conclude with an audience interaction favorite - people are encouraged to check out the lyrics to "Bohemian Rhapsody."

The Friday concert begins at 8 p.m. Sunday's performance is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $29 for adults, $19 for students aged 16-20. Call 317-488-0070 for information or e-mail info@orkestraprojekt.com.
