Katherine Hilden created her latest body of work with her eyes closed. After studying the work of Dutch master Jan Vermeer for 14 years, Hilden decided to honor Vermeer’s paintings by memorizing them and then drawing them from memory with her eyes closed. She then turned her blind drawings into oil paintings. Hence the title of this show opening Friday, Jan. 5 at Galerie Penumbra in the Murphy Arts Building in Fountain Square: The Recently Discovered Drawings of Vermeer Part IV. The show also includes framed pencil drawings on Basingwerk paper. Hilden’s intent, she says, is to “gain an intuitive understanding of [Vermeer’s] work through [her] own drawings and paintings.” An opening reception, part of IDADA’s First Friday, when galleries all over town will welcome visitors to new shows, will be held from 5-9 p.m. Galerie Penumbra is located at 1043 Virginia Ave. For more information call 317-822-8331 or go to www.galeriepenumbra.com. The Recently Discovered Drawings of Vermeer Part IV runs through Jan. 27.
