Clowes Memorial Hall, Oct. 18
Six arts organizations in town joined forces for last weekend's performances of Carmina Burana. Clowes Memorial Hall, Dance Kaleidoscope, the American Pianists Association, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, Children's Choir, and Chamber Orchestra were all represented in the 200+ performers on stage. Eric Stark, the Artistic
Director of the Symphonic Choir led the performance. This was the pared-back version of the score too, with the orchestra being replaced by two pianos and six percussionists. With a cast that big, I was surprised to be underwhelmed. Maybe the positioning of the instrumentalists and soloists made the music sound weak without the choir, or perhaps it was the fact that Carmina has been performed in Indianapolis three times in the past year. Given the resources the concert had at hand, this piece should have been a truly incredible experience.
