The Earth House Collective will screen Bay Area Cypher July 30. A performance documentary that blends live freestyle presentations with short interviews to document the unique creativity of hip-hop in the San Francisco Bay Area, Bay Area Cypher expands beyond stereotypical presentations of commercialized rap music by capturing the spontaneous and uniquely organic energy of freestyling. Through the hip-hop elements of rhyme and dance, this documentary highlights the spiritual and communal aspects of hip-hop culture, showing how improvisational freestyle is key to manifesting a higher energetic vibration. The piece incorporates footage shot on location in the Bay Area including the Guerilla Café in Berkeley, Calif., the East Side Arts Alliance in East Oakland, West Oakland's Lower Bottoms Black Cultural District and The DJ Project in San Francisco. Director Idris Hassan will be attendance.
Admission to the 8:30 event is $5, with an optional dinner at 7:30 p.m. Earth House is located at 237 N. East St. For more information, go to www.earthhousecollective.org.
