“Italy’s greatest sculptor!” Not Michelangelo. No, this hyperbole was written in the late 1920s about Edgardo Simone, who once did Mussolini and came to this country to become a kind of sculptor to the stars, executing busts of people like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Theodore Dreiser and Franklin Roosevelt. Works by Simone are in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Simone married the composer Radie Britain and the couple became the toast of Hollywood, where Simone was employed by MGM.

The Indianapolis auction house Antique Helper will be holding a public auction of works by Edgardo Simone and furniture and antiques from the Hollywood home he shared with Radie Britain on Dec. 11 at noon. Collectors of Art Deco and Hollywood’s Golden Age should be sure to check this out. Antique Helper is located at 2764 E. 55th Place. For more information or to view an online catalog, visit the Web site at www.antiquehelper.com or call Antique Helper at 317-251-5635.
