In 1957, President Eisenhower was shocked into action by “disgraceful occurrences” in Little Rock, Ark. It was Will Count’s photographs in the Arkansas Democrat of nine black students day after day bravely, peacefully attempting to enter the school that moved the president and in turn the world at large. Counts returned to Little Rock in 1997 to interpret the aftermath on individuals for and opposed to Gov. Faubus’ stand against federally court-ordered school desegregation. He captured an amazing story of reconciliation and growth. When you study the photos in this book you’ll understand why Counts is lauded as one of the top photojournalists worldwide. This new edition is enhanced by an epilogue by McCord, Counts’ editor at the Democrat. This is a must-read book.
