Alchemy Art + Aesthetics

Robert Meko and Nicole Homaya run an innovative hair salon/art gallery in Fountain Square. They can be forgiven for showcasing, in the following instance, some uninspiring work. Herron senior Ken Nurenberg’s “DOT DOT DOT…” consists of three Frisbee-sized black dots side by side on a pink backdrop, using a whole gallery wall as the canvas. The three dots take the form of an ellipsis. Maybe this is the artist’s way of demonstrating his apparent lack of ambition in this particular project. You may wonder, as you look at this dotted pink wall, if there’s some joke that you’re not getting. You may even recall the film Art School Confidential … Fortunately, if you drop by Alchemy for a haircut or are just passing through, the Masterpiece in a Day visual arts winners are still on display at the salon/gallery. Check out Jay Parnell’s “Best of Show” series of prints entitled “Black Moon.” Through Oct. 31;

Having lived and worked in Indy on and off since 1977, and currently living in Carmel, I've seen the city change a great deal. I love covering the arts in all its forms, and the places where the arts and broader cultural issues intersect.
