The Jazz Kitchen; June 8

Drummer Jack Gilfoy passed away a few short weeks ago — a loss that will be felt here for a long time. Gilfoy’s embrace of the city’s jazz scene was generous and large, a fact made manifest at Sunday’s tribute at the Jazz Kitchen featuring a lineup of bands and artists to whom Gilfoy lent his talents, including members of the IUPUI Jazz Ensemble, the Jazz State of Indiana Quintet and the MidCoast Swing Orchestra. Performances by everyone involved were never less than moving; Everett Greene didn’t just sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” he reinvented it.
