Comedy Wanda Sykes is everywhere. Über present. Starbucks present. And, in case you were wondering, she’s also done everything: sitcoms, sports commentator, magazine writer, actress, hell, she’s even got a new book coming out (Yeah I Said It, Simon and Shuster) and a new comedy series on the way (Wanda Does It on Comedy Central). Wanda Sykes will appear at the Murat on Sunday Reveling in the absurd, Sykes manages to be shocking without being offensive. Always over the top, but never across the line. Whether she is offering to become a “conjugal visit volunteer” at the local prison, complaining about a personal trainer or outlining the dangers of corporate CEOs — “I walk past some little gang banger I don’t even blink; but if I see a white dude with a Wall Street Journal I haul ass … I ain’t never been mugged of my future” — she’s never predictable. Like a girlfriend who just loves to point out your warts, she’ll tell you the ugly truth but she’s not really trying to get in your grill. She’s just looking out for your best interest. Unless, of course, you’re a corporate CEO.
Sykes is appearing at the Murat Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 24 with special guest Keith Robinson. Show time is 7:30 and tickets, available through Ticketmaster, are $29.75.
Also in town this week is John Bizarre, whose seemingly elastic mug will be headlining at Crackers Downtown (247 S. Meridian) Wednesday through Saturday. Bizarre has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and took a turn as a guest on the Drew Carey Show. Tickets run $8 to $16 but anyone bringing a canned food item will be admitted free to the Wednesday show. The food will be donated to needy families during the holiday season.
