Left to right: Brent Wolgamott, James Rice, Matt A. Winings and B.J. Whetstine “Fight the Urge” in a number from ‘Naked Boys Singing’ at the Phoenix Theatre.Naked Boys Singing — do you really need a synopsis? The Phoenix Theatre has brought the musical revue that celebrates male nudity to its stage for those 18 and over. Yup, if ya wanna gawk, you must be of age.
Directed by Bryan Fonseca, this is a fun show. It teases you about your natural inclination to stare at seven penises proudly presented, and it pokes fun at the penis itself, sex (mainly gay sex), masturbation and more in songs such as “Perky Little Porn Star” (Brent Wolgamott) and “Bliss of a Bris” (Matt A. Winings, Wolgamott, Jeremy Wilson, James Rice, B.J. Whetstine).
But the tone can slow down and get serious, as in “Window to Window” (Rich Simone), about two men who see each other every night but never speak, and “Kris, Look What You’ve Missed” (Whetstine), about a friend lost to AIDS. And the guys aren’t naked all the time — being a predominantly gay show, you get your requisite drag number in “The Entertainer,” and various costumes — and half costumes — in other numbers.
The voices aren’t all stellar, but, just in case no one else says it, it takes serious balls to get up on stage and perform buck naked. Therefore, the entire cast deserves high praises.
Standout numbers include the before mentioned “Perky Little Porn Star” and “Kris, Look What You’ve Missed,” as well as “Nothin’ But the Radio On” (Simone, Winings, Martin, Wilson, Wolgamott) — but these aren’t the ones that will make you laugh the most. Just imagine the kick line … Naked Boys Singing continues through July 25; call 635-PLAY, 749 N. Park Ave.
