Playwright, poet and performer Aquaila Shene got her start in Indianapolis with the play My People, My People and the poetry concert In Search of Self. Then she went to New York to make her mark as a spoken word performer. Her one-woman show, Give Me the Mic!, played Off-Broadway at the Triad Theatre and combines poetry and theater. Directed by Tony Award-winning Trezana Beverley, Give Me the Mic! uses Shene’s poetry to create the narrative of a young African-American woman’s journey in search of courage and self-worth. Give Me the Mic! plays for one night only at the Madame Walker Theatre Center June 14 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Walker box office, 617 Indiana Ave. For more information about Give Me the Mic! visit www.aquailashene.com or call 317-496-7494.
