Swan Balloon is a children's story that was read by a
narrator sitting stationary in the middle of the stage, speaking almost
exclusively in monotone. There was nothing imaginative or engaging to be found
in its storyline, characters or subtext. The rare moments when the narrator
showed life felt forced, like he was doing someone a favor by being there. The
audience is expected to be touched by the apparently sordid separation of two
friends, but the relationship was only developed for three minutes of the
hour-long story, leaving me feeling as disinterested in the outcome as the
narrator seemed to be.
