Fringe review: Andrea Merlyn's Book of Secrets

Deep in Love

Deborah Asante; Indianapolis

3 stars

You would be hard-pressed to find a more charismatic woman

in Indianapolis — let alone the Fringe Festival — than Deborah

Asante. Her warm demeanor is inviting and makes everything she says feel like

you're sitting at a family dinner, listening to your most interesting relative

tell a long story; it might not be told perfectly and the language might be

somewhat non-descript, but her personable, honest character makes up for any

short-comings in inventiveness. Her show is largely conversational, and each

performances features a different love story — though the term "love

story" is loosely defined. The stories are engaging, clever and memorable

— but not exactly groundbreaking.
