Boy in the Basement
Wisdom Tooth Theater Project; Anderson, IN
This hormone-enraged romp is a very accessible introduction
to comedic theater and has bucketsful of pop-appeal, but it lacks any real
direction or ingenuity. The narrator's part is beautifully written; his lines
of classic literary imagery are read from off-stage, while scenes of physical
comedy silently transpire on stage with excellent comedic pace. The comic value
of the show is at its best when no one on stage is talking. The overtly
stereotypical characters are each endearing in their own way, but are shallowly
layered. In a sentence: it's a slightly smarter theatric version of American
Pie, with a few breadcrumbs for the
well-read theater lover.
