Paul Strickland; Louisville
ComedySportz Arena: 721 Mass Ave. "I'm Paul Strickland and I'm divorced." The opening lines to "A Brighter Shade of Blue" set the stage for an impressionistic recollection of the last few years in Strickland's life. His work mocks easy targets easily enough (Arkansans, trailer park residents, hitchhikers), but is most resonant in its more serious moments, as when Strickland is surprised that a city hall clerk knows, even before they declare their business, that Strickland and his wife are in the office to begin divorce proceedings. Strickland draws out some
memorable characters (a hitchhiker named Corndog, himself as a child), even if
the structure of the piece is a little shaky.
