Dance Kaleidoscope is kicking off its 35th season with one of its strongest works, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, with choreography by David Hochoy. This will be the fifth time that DK has presented Carmina Burana — it is a proven fan favorite that has also won critical acclaim.
Orff’s work is based on suppressed monastic songs and poems from the 13th century. The texts were kept secret because of their R-rated spirit; those monks had a lot on their minds. In 1937, Orff set the texts to music, creating a work for orchestra, chorus and soloists. The result is a powerfully rhythmic, lusty score that has become one of the most popular pieces in the concert music canon.
The program will open with Butler Chamber Dance in Cynthia Pratt’s “1st of 3 in 17,” to the music of Mozart.
DK’s Carmina Burana will be performed Oct. 12-15 at the Indiana Repertory Theatre. The Thursday preview performance is at 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s show is at 2:30 p.m. There will be a one-hour mini-matinee featuring Butler Chamber Dance and Kenyetta Dance Company at noon Thursday for $6. Otherwise, ticket prices range from $15-$36 and are available at the IRT ticket office or by calling 317-635-5252 or at www.irtlive.com. For more information, go to www.dancekal.org.
