The Virsky-Ukrainian National Dance Company will perform Oct. 21, 7:30 p.m. at Pike Performing Arts Center, 6701 Zionsville Road. Folk dance becomes polished performance with this 85-member company featuring dancers and musicians from the expansive, central European region directly north of the Black and Azov seas. Anna Kisselgoff wrote in a recent New York Times review, “At root, most folk dances have something to do with making the crops grow. But when theatricalized with a touch of genius and a great deal of creativity, they become part of an international dance repertory. To watch the fabulous virtuosity of this company’s young men and women in their vibrantly colored costumes [is] ... to appreciate great dancing by any definition.”
Tickets are $13-18, call 216-5455; or visit www.PikePAC.org. If you miss this stunning company at Pike, catch them Oct. 22 at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; 800/KCPATIX.
