If Sutiweyu Sandoval, aka “Sabroso,” artistic director of Foreal Art Company, succeeds in carrying out the vision he has for Indianapolis’ street dance community, then there will soon be another free breakdance battle, and you will want to be there. “Breaking Even,” organized by both Foreal and The Break Alliance, marked the first time that a formal battle in Indianapolis has not been forced to piggyback on a mother event. “Breaking Even” was completely conceived and organized by dancers as a tribute to a free, organic process of learning an artistic craft, and the result was dynamic, in-your-face and all-inclusive. With judges hailing from three different states, a professional DJ, cash prizes totaling $500 and a free after-party at Midtown Grill, “Breaking Even” proved that art does not have to be on a stage to be professional.
