Cabaret at the Columbia Club, April 9-10

We knew we were in the presence of an amazingly fine talent sharing a memorable event as Melora Hardin took us on a journey. Opening with a rousing "Raise the Roof" she switched to the dusky ballad, "You," followed by Sondheim's eye-rolling "Everybody Says Don't." It was two hours full of surprises with her own songs and standards presented in a different light. Hardin epitomizes Madeleine Albright's observation that "Women can have it all, but not all at once." What surprised and endeared Hardin to us was her openness. Her vocal range was impressive, undergirded by a thorough understanding of lyrics beyond the literal. Was there a dry eye at the close of "I Dreamed a Dream?" The depth of loss was haunting.
