I hate to keep flogging this horse, but unless arts advocates understand the true dimensions of anti-art demagoguery that's loose in the land, we'll never figure out how to outfox it.
So here's another exhibit, this by way of Indiana's own Congressman Mike Pence. The "it" he is referring to is the recovery package which had provided $50 million to the NEA to help support nonprofit arts organizations that have seen state, local and philanthropic funding cut in the past few months.
"It included wasteful government spending that has nothing to do with creating jobs. As I asked on this floor last week, what does $50 million to the National Endowment for the Arts have to do with creating jobs in Indiana?"
The day before I happened on what Congressman Pence probably considers an exercise in common sense Hoosier values, I received bulletins that the Eiteljorg Museum and the Indianapolis Symphony are both laying off workers.
Need I say more?
