INDY'S WEEKLY ALTERNATIVE NEWSPAPER HIGHLIGHTING ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

What Would Jesus Buy?

by Ed Johnson-Ott

Two and a half stars (PG)

Sorta-documentary by Rob VanAlkemade following performance artists Bill Talen — reinvented as bleached-blond evangelist the Rev. Billy — as he runs the Church of Stop Shopping with his wife and travels the country fighting the “shopocalypse” by urging people to stop being so materialistic. Entertaining for a while, then the repetitive publicity stunts grow tiresome. A Charlie Brown Christmas gets the same message across in a third of the time and without any confrontations with the police. 91 minutes. DVD INFO: Includes deleted scenes, printable lyrics to the choir’s unique Christmas carols and an eight-minute public access show featuring the Rev. Billy and the choir.
