When an ex-girlfriend visited Horace Webster, Janet Gilray didn’t exactly approve. Thereafter, she wouldn’t see him or answer his calls, so he decided to do something dramatic to get her back. He wrote a song, “Spend a Few Lifetimes,” and sent it to the Wank and O’Brien radio show on Indy’s HANK 97.1 FM.

The disc jockeys contacted Webster on their show and relayed his side of the story, playing his music on air. Gilray responded by sending in her own song, “Spend a Few Hours with You.” Once the musicians had both songs in rotation, their lover’s spat became the humorous object of calls to the station.

Their spontaneous on-air popularity inspired Gilray to invite Webster to join her performance at a Toys for Tots benefit at Stables. Forming The Saga, they were a smash at the benefit and, more important, their spark re-ignited.

“It was really awkward when we first started rehearsing and while we were doing the show,” Webster says. “After the set, we stuck around and watched the headliners that evening and took a walk around the parking lot, just — ya’ know — talking about nothing.”

Blessed with natural harmony and pleasant vocals, the duo has picked up a band and is ready to continue playing country “with an edge” as a couple once again.
