Spirit & Place Festival, week 2

“Praying in Color” is a workshop led by Sybil MacBeth, author of Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God. Participants will learn how to pray via their own visual art through an intercessory prayer exercise and will discuss its versatile uses for both children and adults. No formal artistic ability is necessary. The event is Nov. 8, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Indianapolis Center for Congregations. Cost for the workshop is $25 and covers supplies, lunch and snacks.


• Storytelling Arts of Indiana will present Barbara McBride-Smith telling “Heroines, Housewives and Harlots: Biblical Women Who Inspire Generosity” at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Nov. 8, 7 p.m. McBride-Smith retells stories of the Bible with “respectful irreverence.” Tickets are $10 at the door.


• Playwright, poet and performer Michael Mack will dramatize his early life with a schizophrenic mother in his one-man play Hearing Voices (Speaking in Tongues). The essence of the show is the generous spirit and tangible gifts of those living with or affected by mental health/illness. There will be post-show discussions for audience talk-back. Shows are Nov. 8 at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, Nov. 9 at All Saints Episcopal Church and Nov. 10 at the Wheeler Arts Community, 7:30 p.m. A donation of $5 is requested.


Carrie Newcomer, singer and songwriter, and Phil Gulley, storyteller, writer and pastor, will present “Gifts of Spirit in Song and Story” Nov. 10, 7:30 p.m. at First Friends Meeting. The two will celebrate the awareness and appreciation of everyday life as is reflected in their Quaker Faith. Cost is $15, which benefits the Friends Education Fund.


• Learn how to create a blog people actually want to read when Margaret Mason, author of No One Cares What You Had for Lunch: 100 Ideas for Your Blog, presents “Something to Blog About: Sharing Stories and Building Communities on the Web.” A reception and booksigning will follow the presentation. Admission is free. The event is Nov. 11, 2-4 p.m. at IUPUI’s University Library.
