650 NorthJoe Foley Benefit
Birdy’s Bar & Grill
Saturday, March 10, 7:30 p.m., $8
The music scene in Indy knows how to come together to take care of its own. Consider, for example, the extensive list of performers donating their time for a benefit show to help with funeral expenses for Joe Foley, father of local scene photographer Joey Foley. The long list of bands performing at the March 10 benefit at Birdy’s includes Vodka De Milo, Shadeland, the Twilight Sentinels, Jeff Byrd & The Wingmen, Red Light Driver, 650 North, 19Clark25 and the Mudkids.
Joe is currently on hospice care, with only a few months expected to live.
“He’s the kind of person that would help anybody out,” Joey says. “If he got a phone call in the middle of the night at 3 a.m., he’d give people a ride in a snowstorm to get them groceries … The money [from the benefit] is going to be used to go towards his funeral, because I’m the only living relative I can find. I’ve hired a private investigator to find other family members, and I can’t find anyone.”
The support for the Foleys reached the point that Joey ended up splitting it into two shows; the next benefit will be March 31 at the Irving Theater featuring bands such as Mercy Kill, Order of the Black Hand and About the Fire.
“I really appreciate everything everyone’s done,” Joey says. “I don’t know what I’d do without them.”
