Jazz Notes 7/18/07

• Animals & All That Jazz “Does It Big” this week at the Indianapolis Zoo with Gregg Bacon’s eight-piece band with vocalist Leslie Hollis and 10-year-old saxophone prodigy Bryan Thompson. Performance is at the Café at the Commons stage, rain site is the Party Pavilion. Music goes 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free for zoo members; regular admission to the zoo is $13.50, children 2 to 12 and seniors $8.50. Optional dining by Crystal Catering available and lawn chairs are welcome.

• Last week, two performers of the golden era of Indiana Avenue died. Al Walton, a B-3 organist, had been a member of Marvin Gaye’s band and played with his own group locally for years around Indy. Dwayne Garvin, a drummer, was the son of legendary Flo Garvin.

• The Artsgarden presents The Old School Trio of Melvin Rhyne, Larry Clark and Dave Atkins Thursday. The performance is dedicated to Al Walton, who was originally scheduled to play the date. The Sounds of Essence perform smooth jazz classics Friday. Tuesday, solo guitarist Lou Stant plays blues, jazz, folk and swing. The concerts are at 12:15 p.m. and are free.

• The Side Street Deli at 21st and Illinois streets serves jazz with your lunch from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays until Aug. 30. Gregg Bacon and Sir James Simmons with 10-year-old sax prodigy Bryan Thompson play on Tuesdays. Various artists play on Thursdays.

• The Palace at 5289 E. 38th St. features jazz on Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to midnight with Gregg Bacon and Sir James Simmons. Cover charge $5.

• Wendy Reed will sing with the Ken Fary Duo at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse Sunday jazz downtown from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.; no cover charge.

• The Chatterbox has guitarist Bill Lancton & Friends, Friday; trumpeter Clifford Ratliff’s Quintet plays Indiana Avenue-flavored jazz Saturday. Music goes 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Cathy Morris & Friends play a jazz jam Sunday from 8 to 11 p.m., no cover charge.

• The Jazz Kitchen, Indy’s world-class jazz club/restaurant, presents Goldie & Exquisitely Yours’ soulful style Friday with shows at 9 and 11 p.m. Orquesta Bravo’s 11-member band brings salsa grooves Saturday with shows at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., admission each night $10.

• Saxophonist Rob Dixon & Friends play “Jazz & Jokes” at Morty’s Comedy Joint, 3625 E. 96th St., Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $8.
