Second Annual WICR Jazz Festival

The Second Annual WICR Jazz Festival is Saturday, April 19. The free outdoor event will run from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the University of Indianapolis on Smith Mall (1400 E. Hanna Ave.). Here’s this year’s lineup:

UIndy Jazz Combo, 11-11:45 a.m.
Steve Allee Trio, 12-12:45 p.m.
Dixon/Rhyne Project, 1-1:45 p.m.
Cynthia Layne, 2-2:45 p.m.
Bill Lancton Trio, 3-3:45 p.m.
Monika Herzig Trio, 4-4:45 p.m.

The first jazz festival of the season offers a chance to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Polk Food Services will be preparing food for purchase. It’s a family-friendly, alcohol-free event with free jazz and parking. (In case of rain, the event will be held inside the Schwitzer Center.) Presented by WICR 88.7 “The Diamond,” the festival is a way for the station to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month and say thanks to its listeners.

Catching up with Cheryl

Former Indy resident and jazz vocalist Cheryl Hayes e-mailed me from Thailand to say that she will not be able to return home to Indy this summer to celebrate her birthday with a performance. Hayes performs throughout the Pacific Rim and calls Thailand her home. A recent change in Thailand’s immigration laws has made her ineligible to return to the States until after October 2008. Hayes wanted her friends and fans to know that she is sorry and heartbroken about the situation.
