INDY'S WEEKLY ALTERNATIVE NEWSPAPER HIGHLIGHTING ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Indy Film scene honored by "MovieMaker"

For the second year in a row, Indianapolis has been singled out by MovieMaker magazine with an honorable mention in its list of "The 10 Best Cities in North America for Moviemakers."
"Legwork," directed by Javier Reyna, was one of the local films singled out by "MovieMaker" magazine.
The article states, "[Indianapolis has] always had the right ingredients in terms of commercial production houses, viable locations and a healthy arts scene to foster a moviemaking community ... it just took some time for that community to make its presence known. That"s exactly what"d been happening in Indy over the last couple of years. If ever there were an opportunity to join a growing film community in its early stages, this is it." In last year"s list, MovieMaker noted the efforts of Jane Rulon and the Indiana Film Commission, the Film Commune and director Shari Lynn Himes as key reasons behind the selection. Those same efforts were acknowledged again this time, along with the regular screenings of local films by Ron Keedy at the Key Cinemas, the Indy Scene TV show produced by the Film Commune, Hime"s Screening Room events and the work of directors Javier Reyna, Garrett Crowe, Richard Payne, Williamson Howe and Dan Hall. "It"s just encouragement for everyone to take a hard look at the potential that"s here and to decide to build on those possibilities," Rulon said. She added, with some whimsy, "If you consider that Indianapolis was one of 12 cities mentioned in the article, and that two of those are Vancouver and Toronto, you could say that we"re in the top 10 U.S. cities." On the subject of what has brought Indianapolis to this kind of attention in the first place, Rulon said, "It"s a combination of vision, numbers of projects and innovative programs like the [Key Cinemas] Filmmaker"s Showcase and The Screening Room. It"s an acknowledgment that people are serious about filmmaking here."
