Naked Neighbors, Caffeinated Youth, Sir Real

This Friday, I went to Club LOGOS in Franklin to check out a few local bands. The first was called The Naked Neighbors, from Greenwood. They played a fairly typical style of fast punk — and although the original songs were good, the covers were great. The singer announced that they were going to do a cover of the “best band ever,” then paused before saying who it was. I was definitely interested then; covers are always the make-or-break of a band. So when they started to play “Clash City Rockers” (by The Clash) I breathed a small sigh of relief then helped start the first mosh pit that I’ve ever seen at LOGOS. Also on their set list was “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones, which had everyone singing along. They played a short set so they made a point of going off stage then coming back on for an encore before turning over the stage to the next band, Caffeinated Youth.

To my horror, Caffeinated Youth began their set by playing the beginning of a Blink 182 song, then cut it off quickly and laughed at the audience when people cheered for the song. They played 10 or 11 songs, including covers by Screeching Weasel, AFI, and Nirvana — a band that I never really got into, but that everybody else seemed to like. At the end of their set, there was a small coup as a friend and I got on stage — a debut gig maybe? — and did a very rough rendition of the Sex Pistols’ “God Save The Queen” with a borrowed drummer, guitarist and of course, equipment.

Sir Real finished off the show and I couldn’t really get into their style. To put it simply, they were emo. I’m sure if I could understand the words, they would have had to do with heartbreak or something along those lines; almost everyone else seemed to enjoy them, though. And although I couldn’t get into the lapses into Nirvana or emo, in general, I enjoyed the show.
