Are you really registered?

If you think you’re registered to vote in November’s all-important presidential election but don’t know for certain, now is the time to make sure. Just ask Eric Bucy.

 

In November 2003, when Bucy moved to Marion County from Hendricks County, he thought he had filled out the proper paperwork to transfer his voter registration. But when Busy attempted to fill a vacant Rocky Ripple Town Board seat earlier this year, he found his transferred registration had been lost in the shuffle. This meant he also lost out on filling the board spot. Election officials informed Bucy that in November 2003 there was a recall, and his paperwork had been forwarded to the state along with hundreds of other unprocessed requests.

 

In February of 2004, when the recall was settled, the Marion County Voter Registration Board received his paperwork back. But in the May primary, there was yet another election recall. His transfer request went back to the state and was put on hold once again.

 

On Aug. 9, Bucy visited the City-County Building to file a complaint, and was promptly issued a new voter registration card. He is now able to vote in the November elections. But the Rocky Ripple Town Board slot was filled by someone else because Bucy wasn’t eligible, as he lacked the required voter registration.

 

But that disappointment is not what concerns Bucy the most. “There are still people out there who may not have been put into the system,” he said.

 

Voters can check registration status by calling the Marion County Board of Voter Registration at 327-5040. The deadline for registering for November’s election is Oct. 1.

 

People who are not yet registered to vote in Marion County can visit the Marion County Board of Voter Registration Web site at www.indygov.org/voters to find a list of locations for registering, as well as information on transferring registration after a move to a new address.
