Contest Preview

We were going to run this preview in the more timely Aug. 11 issue, but we got to thinking: If this contest for the best toast starts Aug. 12, you need time to get your material together.

The Indianapolis Irish Festival Toast Contest, sponsored by Guinness, will begin Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at The Claddagh (downtown: 234 S. Meridian St.), followed by MacNivens Tavern and Restaurant (339 Mass. Ave.) on Aug. 13 and Micky’s (13644 N. Meridian) on Aug. 14. Over the next four weeks, you’ll get to battle other toasters at other locations, including The Rathskeller (on Aug. 20), Moe & Johnny’s (Sept 9.), Pat Flynn’s (Sept. 10) and Claddagh Irish Pub (northside on Sept. 11). At each event, a champion will be chosen to compete in the semi-finals on Sept. 17 at the annual Irish Festival at Military Park. The next night, finalists will compete for the grand prize: airfare for two to Ireland.

Here are the contest rules: You must be 21 or over. The toast must be no longer than 60 seconds, with Irish subject matter such as love of Ireland, Irish culture, literature, alcohol, humor — or any other related, recognizable Irish subject matter. Profanity is prohibited.

Competitors will be judged on subject matter, creativity, oration and crowd applause (i.e. bring your friends!)
