Media, Politics, and Misinformation in the 21st Century

Robert Jensen is an associate professor in the School of Journalism of the Univ. of Texas at Austin, where he teaches media law, ethics, and politics, and has authored numerous books. He contends that critical, independent journalism is a basic requirement for a functional democracy, and that journalism's failure helps explain the sad state of American democracy today. While pundits and politicians in the dominant culture argue whether the media are too liberal, the real failures of journalism to monitor the centers of power are obscured. In this lecture Jensen argues that commercial journalism's structures, practices, and ideology make it increasingly difficult for journalists to perform their role. Democratic renewal in the U. S. requires media reform, and that requires attention to the collapse of democratic institutions. Jensen offer ideas for change that will spark discussion of the future of our democracy.
