Hundreds Rally for quality jobs at Indy Hotels on Saturday
Photos By rachel rose | Apr 7, 2008

The hotel and convention industry in Indianapolis is booming, but workers in Indianapolis are among the lowest paid hotel workers of any major city in the United States. For instance, housekeepers in Indianapolis start at about $7.50/hr, while housekeepers working for the same hotel in Chicago start at $13.55/hr. Now workers are organizing to transform their poverty- wage jobs into well paying jobs with affordable health care.
One such organized meeting was held on Saturday early in the afternoon. Hundreds of supporters, including 7th district congressman Andre Carson and representatives of the Barack Obama presidential campaign, gathered on Monument Circle around 12 pm. After marching in front of the Westin Hotel, where many who were in attendance are employed, several speeches were delivered on the south steps of the state house. It was a beautiful sight.

flooding on the northeast side
Photos By rachel rose | Mar 24, 2008

Property owner Jay Simmons credits housing developments north of Windridge office building for flooding of this parking lot last week. Developers have taken the practice of filling in "flood planes" with dirt to avoid observing regulations which prohibit building in such areas. The result is runoff, and increased flooding in areas near flood planes which still exist. Windridge office building is located next to Fall Creek at Emerson Way and Fall Creek Pkwy. When these pictures were taken on Friday, March 21, (two days after the rain which caused the flooding), the depth of the water in this parking lot was about 2 feet at its deepest points.
