On January 6th, Elvis fans from around Central Indiana can gather at Locals Only to celebrate the music of the King of Rock and Roll.
"If the King were still alive, he'd be turning 72 that weekend. We wanted to bring together an event that showcases the diversity of his music. Elvis was more than a rockabilly act. His music assembled elements of rock, gospel and R&B in ways that influenced almost every musician that came after him," said Nuvo cartoonist and show promoter Wayne Bertsch "I wanted to assemble a line-up that reflected the diverse sound that made Elvis a standout even amongst the other giants in the Sun records stable."
The show, scheduled to begin around 10 pm, features such diverse acts as Hillbilly power-grass band The Cousin Brothers, The Mess Arounds, Indy's hot rockin' blues trio fronted by Danny Thompson and young band of 1990's style arena-rockers called Hustler.
Locals Only bills itself as "Indy's Art and Music pub," and is fast gaining a reputation as an A-list stop for local bands and touring acts alike. Their kitchen will feature Elvis-centric menu of items as deliciously bad for you as they were for the King. Locals Only is located at the corner of 56th and Keystone on Indianapolis' north side, behind the Mousetrap Bar and Grill.
Hustler:
A young band of rockers playing a style of music that enjoyed the height of its popularity around the time these kids were born. They play mostly original music in the style of Guns and Roses, Motley Crue or early Aerosmith. They are very similar to and often share the bill with this year's Battle of the bands winners Emerson Rose who they gave a pretty good run for there money in the Battle's final rounds. Now that their last few members have turned 21, they can start booking full fledged bar shows. Expect to see much more of Hustler in the coming year.
The Cousin Brothers:
The Cousin Brothers are no stranger to putting great new twists on cover songs. Serving up Nine Inch Nails and Poison with a hillbilly twist that they call "Power Grass" is what they build every show around. They have great originals as well and are right up there with the Fuglees when it comes to writing that irresistible hook. Many will recognize The Cousin Brothers from their song tributes to Peyton Manning on X103, but you'll walk away with a new appreciation when you hear their other originals like "Manny the Pre-op Tranny" and their breast cancer awareness tune "Nice Rack". I can only imagine what the songs of Elvis will sound like coming from their mandolin and banjo.
The Mess Arounds:
Danny Thompson is well known to rockabilly fans as the long-time front man of Bigger than Elvis. Thompson is joined by Jeff Stevenson of The Roundups, and Glen Hopkins to form The Mess Arounds. They play the hot, rockin' rhythm and blues sound that made the Sun Records music so dangerous in the minds of 1950's white America.
