Have you ever dreamed of discovering a new species? Brown County State Park in Nashville, Ind., has scheduled a "Bio-Blitz" for the weekend of June 5-7. Volunteers will be able to work alongside scientists to comb the park's nearly 16,000 acres in an effort to catalog every living species in the park, from bobcats to tiger beetles, including those that are rare, endangered and possibly even unknown. Volunteers will also be given access to areas of the park usually off limits and will be free to work in any of 10 "bio-units." Park staff will present interpretive programs that highlight species discovered as well as describing environmental challenges facing botanists and ecologists. Research accomplished during the Blitz will also assist park officials in making future resource management decisions and track the spread of invasive species. A gate fee of $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle will be charged. For more information, visit www.bcbioblitz.com.
