Cheryl and David Mattingly have turned Galerie Penumbra, in Fountain Square’s Murphy Arts Center, into one of the city’s most lively destinations for visual arts. This week, they set sail on an ambitious four-month project intended to place an edifying focus on female artists and artmaking called In Her Element.
From March 3 through June, Penumbra will present four successive one-woman shows featuring (in order) Peg Zeglin Brand, Susan Hodgin, Nhat Tran and Rebecca Lyon. This Friday night the spotlight will be on new work by Peg Zeglin Brand. Entitled Picture Yourself Here, Brand’s exhibit features interactive, free-standing paintings. The viewer is invited to peek her head through holes where the faces of famous female subjects should have been. This is both a parody and feminist commentary on perceptions of beauty and canonical Western art.
The opening reception takes place from 5-9 p.m.
Then, March 4 at 1 p.m., Brand, who holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Illinois, Chicago, and has published extensively on questions concerning women, art and aesthetics, will give a lecture entitled “Women in Today’s Artworld.”
These events are free of charge. Galerie Penumbra is located at 1043 Virginia Ave. Call 317-508-8043 or go to www.galeriepenumbra.com for more information.
